How Parents Can Tell Normal Interest From Autism Fixation or ADHD Hyperfocus
Updated: May 2026.

Animago is an online team of highly qualified therapists who work with children and coach parents using evidence-based methods. For children ages 3–7, Animago therapists meet as animated characters over live video.
We help with common childhood challenges — fears, anxiety, low confidence, shyness, and more — and support healthier parent-child relationships. The Animago team has already helped more than 2,500 children build resilience!

1/4
Dinosaurs
General interest
The child enthusiastically reads books and watches cartoons about dinosaurs. Can tell about several types. Interest changes after a few weeks or months.
Hyperfocus for ADHD
The child is so engrossed in a book about dinosaurs that he forgets about time and does not respond to requests (for example, to put away toys). The interest may be deep, but not necessarily sustainable: in a week it could be robots or space.
Fixation in ASD
A child spends hours googling information about dinosaurs, memorizing scientific names and classifications, and it can be difficult for him to switch to another topic in a conversation. Interest remains the same over months or years.
2/4
Construction
General interest
The child enjoys building houses and cars, experimenting with different ideas. May become distracted if offered another activity
Hyperfocus for ADHD
The child is so engrossed in construction that he does not respond to his mother’s call and forgets about his homework. He can build according to instructions or come up with his own models.
Fixation in ASD
The child is passionate about building a very specific model, often according to given rules (for example, using only blue parts). The process may be repetitive and any changes or interventions may cause discomfort to the child.
3/4 Favorite cartoon
General interest
The child often watches this cartoon, but agrees to switch to another activity after a reasonable explanation.
Hyperfocus for ADHD
The child watches the cartoon for several hours in a row, he is completely absorbed in the plot and ignores requests and offers to break for lunch.
Fixation in ASD
The child memorizes the dialogues and intonations of the characters, repeatedly reviews certain scenes and often imitates them. Cartoon may be one of the few acceptable topics of communication.
4/4 Collection of pebbles
General interest
The child collects a few pebbles, but sometimes forgets about his hobby or happily adds other elements, such as shells.
Hyperfocus for ADHD
The child enthusiastically searches for and sorts stones, forgetting about other matters. After some time, interest may change.
Fixation in ASD
The child collects and sorts stones according to strict criteria (size, color, texture). Any attempt to change the order causes him great anxiety.
It is important for parents to consider the duration, flexibility, and response of the child to changes to better understand when to seek professional help.
Animago psychologists help children cope with various fixations or hyperfixations so that they do not significantly reduce the quality of communication with other children and do not prevent the child from taking responsibility for other important things in life.
