Anxiety Before Sports Training

Anxiety Before Sports Training

Liana is 7 years old. She has been seriously involved in gymnastics for 4 years now. A month ago her coach changed. Now, when Liana gets ready for training, tears appear in her eyes and she tells her mother: “My stomach and head hurt.” Mom turns to Animago, and Liana meets a coach in the form of a cheerful tiger cub Tiga.

Before starting classes, each Animago coach carefully studies parents’ complaints in order to formulate hypotheses about the child’s difficulties. Based on them, the coach, together with the parents, draws up an action plan, including:
1. Teaching the child techniques for identifying and regulating emotions.
2. Accompanying parents and creating supportive conditions for the most effective coaching.

The coach suggested that the reason for Liana’s poor health could be disturbing thoughts that something bad or dangerous could happen during training. These thoughts lead to feelings of anxiety and discomfort. The coach tested this hypothesis by conducting 3 therapeutic sessions with Tiga and Liana. And the hypothesis was confirmed!

First, the coach established contact with Liana: thanks to Tigi, this was done in a matter of minutes.

The girl admitted that she once saw a new coach loudly shouting at adult girls when they made mistakes. This scared her so much that now every time before training she thinks: “The coach might scold me.” There is excitement and unpleasant sensations in the body, but Liana, swallowing her tears, goes to training. Liana suppresses her excitement, gets very tired from this, and makes mistakes in training. And her excitement next time becomes even greater.

Tigi taught Liana about the nature of anxiety and taught her to deal with anxiety constructively, without suppression. Liana realized the value of mistakes and began to treat them more calmly, due to which the number of mistakes decreased. She also learned to react more calmly to the coach’s anger.

Now Liana gets ready for training without stress and anxiety. Her athletic confidence has increased and her athletic performance has improved.
